How to - soap brows

It’s an old, old makeup trick.

With the VAST amount of brow products available now, why resort to this decade old technique?

Simply put, glycerin soap (basically the clear ones) holds MUCH better than any brow gels on the market. It gives a fuller and fluffier look to the brows. I’m not a fan of the overdrawn Instagram brow myself, since I love a more editorial approach to makeup, and that’s why soaping the brows are more appealing to me than to fill in and overdraw naturally skinnier brows.

I like this technique for medium to full brows. They look wonderful just soaped up with nothing underneath. For sparse brows, it’s good to put in a tiny bit of colour under to avoid drawing attention to the lack of brow hairs. Once the colour is in, and soap on, a sparse brow will look a lot fuller without the “full-on” makeup look. I love the brow liner by Amaterasu* to achieve this, because of how natural it looks and how long wearing it is. But keep in mind, the less colour underneath the better it looks, so be VERY light-handed when you do put colour through.

How to -

It’s actually very easy. First, brush out any foundation that is on your brows. Dampen a clean spoolie (mascara wand shaped brush), rub it very lightly on the soap (maybe 3-4 passes) and be sure not to scrape out chunks of soap, then apply it to the brows. Brush up and backcomb and up again until you get them styled where you want them. Once it dries, you are all set!

Precautions -

Soap has the potential to seep down to the eyes due to excessive sweat or water, which can sting BADLY. Additionally, consistent use of soap on the eyebrows can cause skin irritation due to most soaps' high pH levels. I am careful to not rub the soap onto the skin but only on the hairs, do be careful if you have sensitive skin.

All in all, it’s my favourite way to do brows, and I soap my brows every time I do my makeup. Hope this was helpful!
